Soppong - Visiting the Karen Village

It turns out the 2nd day trekking to the Karen Village is guided by Khun Pak. She is amazing with explaining to us on the nature of trees, plants and insects along the journey. What kind of fruits or flowers can be eaten and for what purpose? One particular insect which she explains that after the female counterpart makes love to the male counterpart, she immediately devours the male, Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn!

She describes to us that the trees with roots running around the branches have spirit thus that explains why some trees are ordained with a red or yellow saffron cloth around it. We also visited a cave with beautiful formations and a temple cave with an ancient chedi.

On our way, Khun Pak asked us to pick up a type of vegetables which the fishes nearby the cave would love to eat. Once we throw the vegetables into the river, the fish rushes up to the surface and gulp down all the vegetables instantly. Legend said, the spirit of the mountain guards the fish from harm. As a result of their protected status, the fishes although vegetarian grow quite long, around 80cm or longer. There is a sign that warn anyone caught fishing have to be fined 2,500 Baht.

We end the trekking by visiting the Karen Village. It’s a small village with population of about 500 people. Since most of the villagers have gone farming, we could only see a few old ladies selling their handicrafts. I bought a hand weaved scarf, while Roderick bought a traditional hill tribe Top usually wear by the man during the Songkran (New Year).

So much for the day!
Till then, Time out,
KN
